Registrations for Semester 2 will open 9 am, Monday 31 July 2023.
PASS sessions will begin in Week 2 of semester, Monday 7 August.Click here to register for PASS.
---
PASS involves weekly hour-long sessions where you work in groups of 10 to 16 students to answer specially prepared activities and problem questions, based around a unit of study you’re enrolled in.
PASS doesn’t re-teach or deliver new content. It’s an opportunity to reinforce key points from lecture and tutorial materials while applying your skills to solve problem questions. The atmosphere of the sessions is relaxed, friendly and low-pressure and you’re encouraged to ask questions and raise concerns with content.
Sessions are led by trained PASS facilitators, who recently excelled in the same unit of study. The facilitator doesn’t re-teach lecture material, but rather guides group interaction and problem solving.
You work interactively with your peers, benefiting not only from group learning but also from the recent experience of your facilitator. As a peer group, generally you decide what is covered in each session. That way, PASS directly responds to your needs and feedback.

Join us for a heartwarming afternoon of compassion and community at the "Kindness Kitchen" event, organized by the Random Acts of Kitchen Society. Together with the support of Student Life Grants and FoodHub USU, we are coming together to make a positive impact on the lives of students facing financial difficulties and food insecurity. 🤝❤️🥪
At this special event, we will gather at the cozy setting of The Regiment Kitchen, a place that fosters togetherness and warmth. Armed with an abundance of fresh ingredients, we will be crafting delicious sandwiches filled with love and care. 🍞🥬🍅
The purpose of this event goes beyond simply preparing sandwiches; it is about creating a supportive network, sharing stories, and lifting each other up during challenging times. We believe that small acts of kindness can make a world of difference, and with each sandwich we make, we aim to nourish not just the body but also the soul. 💕✨
Whether you're an experienced sandwich artist or a first-time volunteer, your presence and contribution will be invaluable. Together, we can make a substantial impact on the lives of our fellow students. 🤝🌟
Come, be part of this wonderful initiative, and let's spread kindness, one sandwich at a time. Together, we can build a stronger, more caring community. 🏘️🌈

Get ready for an unforgettable experience as Sydney Uni Young Vinnies joyfully welcomes you to our much-awaited annual Winter Sleepout!
This Winter, Vinnies Community Sleepouts will take place across NSW to raise awareness of the realities of homelessness and funds for Vinnies homelessness services. Each night, over 120 000 Australians experience homelessness — 50% being women and 25% under 18 years old. Our Winter Sleepout aims to increase awareness of the increasing number of homeless Australians, raise funds for Vinnies homelessness services (this year we are raising funds specifically for Vinnies Van Services) and to educate people and break down misconceptions of people experiencing homelessness.
On the night there will be: dinner, hot food/beverages, games (including Kahoot!), guest speakers, a movie and much more! A Brekky Van-style breakfast will also be provided the next morning. So please come join us for a memorable night on Friday 1 September at 5:30pm at The University of Sydney Quadrangle at our very own Sleepout!
All funds raised will be donated to Vinnies Van services. Vinnies Vans are outreach services that provide meals and snacks, blankets, toiletries, hot beverages, and, most importantly, companionship and referrals where needed to people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. To make a contribution and set up your own fundraising page, please click here or copy the link: https://my.fundraise.vinniesnsw.org.au/vinnies-community-sleepouts/sydney-uni-young-vinnies-winter-sleepout-1

USU Speaker Series with Associate Professor Rick Macourt - The Voice Referendum
Tuesday 12th September, 6.00 - 7.00pm, followed by drinks and snacks in Courtyard Café
On Saturday, 14 October 2023, all Australians will be asked to vote in a referendum to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the constitution through the enshrinement of a Voice to Parliament. The Voice would be an independent and permanent advisory body that provides advice to the Australian parliament and government on matters that affect the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples such as education, health, housing and justice.
USU is thrilled to be welcoming Associate Professor Rick Macourt as our guest speaker to share his perspective on this important topic.
Associate Professor Rick Macourt is a queer descendant of the Gumbaynggirr peoples and Associate Dean, First Nations Strategy and Services, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. He is also Managing Director of First Nations Economics, an Aboriginal-led charity dedicated to driving social, cultural and economic prosperity for First Peoples. Rick has held executive roles in NSW Government and the Westpac Group, and he is a former diplomat having represented Australia at the United Nations. He is a writer, author and an activist dedicated to shaping an Australia where First Peoples can prosper, grounded in kinship and connected to Country.
Join us on Tuesday 12th September from 6pm to learn more about the history behind the Voice, the context and significance of the referendum, and the role of non-Indigenous peoples in this conversation. The event will consist of an informal and lively talk, followed by a 15 minute Q&A. Associate Professor Macourt strongly believes in gaining knowledge and perspective through open conversation, and welcomes all questions on this topic. Make sure to submit your questions for him when you register for your free spot.
USU is committed to creating a culturally safe space in everything we do.

Come and get creative in the Community Garden with an afternoon of sustainable craft! In this hands-on workshop, we'll be learning how to upcycle waste materials into beautiful new items. We'll be doing two activities on the day:
Hanging planters: Recycle waste materials into indoor hanging pot plants - and take home your own plant at the end of the day!
Papermaking: Experience a blend of history and hands-on experience, by learning the age-old mould and deckle paper technique. While rooted in tradition, this craft also underscores the importance of sustainable practices in today's world. And it produces beautiful handmade paper that we can give a personal touch with elements like scents, dried flowers, seeds, and little imperfections!
We'd appreciate it if attendees could bring along paper scraps (old notes, cardboard, coloured paper egg cartons) from home to divert the waste from landfill and give it a new life!

Have you ever wanted to write for the student newspaper but didn't know where to start? Uncovered a campus mystery that you want to explore? Are you interested in Honi Soit but don't know where to start?
If you've answered yes (or even if you answered no), then this is the program for you.
The Honi Soit Development Program is a series of training sessions and brainstorming workshops to help students develop their journalistic skills, participate in Honi and share their ideas with a broader audience. The program is open to all students, regardless of whether you've already reported for Honi.
It is made up of four training sessions with experienced journalists across the genres of News and Analysis, Features, Culture and Perspective and STEM writing. In the week after the training session, there will be a workshop with the Editors where you can develop your ideas and brainstorm how you can transform what you've learnt into an article that you can write and publish in the paper.
If you have any questions, please reach out to the Editors at editors@honisoit.com or on any of Honi's social accounts.

Unleash your inner “piz-caso” at the hottest spot in the west!
The University of Sydney is more than just its Camperdown campus! Join us at the world-class Nepean Clinical School for an event inspired by the ever-popular “paint-and-sip” format. In doing so, you will get to have a fun night with your peers and increase your appreciation of the immense opportunities in western Sydney.
Thanks to the support of University of Sydney Student Life Grants, all painting supplies, food (pizza) and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided for you. This will allow you to solely focus on your work of art (or consuming as much pizza as possible, whichever you prefer).
After the event, your “pizza de résistance” will be unveiled during the Exhibition Party. Artwork will be permanently displayed on the walls of the clinical school, enhancing the space and serving as a reminder for all current and future students and staff of your creative genius. Prizes may also be awarded for the best artwork.
No previous painting experience is required; just a fun-loving attitude and an empty stomach!

Suturing is the use of a needle and thread to hold two edges of a wound together. It is a fundamental skill in surgery as it allows surgical wounds to feel faster and with less risk of infection. It’s a great skill to have, whether you are pursuing a career in healthcare or are keen to know how to stitch someone up!
The Sydney University Surgical Society (SUSS) is excited to hold an ‘Introduction to Surgical Suturing’ workshop open to all USYD students. The workshop is being run by the Institute of Academic Surgery (IAS), a partnership between the University of Sydney and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital that aims to encourage students and hospital staff to further their surgical skills and education.
The workshop is all about hands-on experience. All attendees will be allocated a fake skin pad and surgery-quality sutures to practise simple suturing techniques. The workshop will be taught by experienced junior doctors and/or senior medical students. No experience is required - it’s all about trying something new in a friendly environment.
Spots are limited, so register ASAP!
Please note that times may be subject to change as we are dependent on when we fit into junior doctors’ busy schedules.
