Starting University can be a little overwhelming and we know you may have questions, including what to expect in your first semester of classes.
Your Peer Support Advisors (PSAs) are here to help! The PSAs are multilinguals students, trained to answer a range of enquiries, including connecting you with support services, and tips on a variety of social activities you can get involved in. They were once also in your situation and can provide advice on the best ways to get started at the uni.
The Getting Started Q & A sessions are your chance to join an online meeting and ask any questions that can help you to plan your journey to Sydney and your time for the first few weeks of the semester.

Do you have questions about your science degree, major or course requirements? Starting university can be daunting and sometimes it is easier to be able to have your questions answered in person.
The Faculty of Science Academic Advice Hall allows you to talk to an academic and ask all your questions. Whether it's understanding which units you need to enrol in, what prerequisite knowledge is required, or you just want to understand the difference between a minor, major and a program, this is the place to find the answers.
Once you have had your questions answered (or before), just take a short walk around the corner to the Science Student Societies Welcome BBQ to grab your free sausage sandwich and find out everything available to you outside of the classroom!

The transition from high school to university is incredibly exciting! But, it is also a big change and sometimes it can be a little confusing. The Faculty of Science's Commencing Student Transition Program is designed to help you transition to university life as smoothly as possible by allowing you to talk to the students who have been through it before and the staff who will run your courses.
Available both in-person and online, this program will begin with a School Welcome delivered by the key staff that will be facilitating your first year units followed by activities that will allow you to meet your new peers and some older students currently studying your chosen major/stream. If you are attending in person, a complimentary lunch will be provided along with a scavenger hunt (with prizes of course) to help you get to know the Camperdown campus!
The information you will need and the experiences you will have throughout university will depend on the major and/or stream you have chosen to study. For this reason, we have set up a Transition Program for each group of majors (Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science; Physics; Chemistry; Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES); Geosciences; History and Philosophy of Science; and Psychology), as well as the Medical Science and Health streams. It is likely that you will have chosen either a major and a minor or two majors when enrolling in your degree. If this is the case, it is up to you which major you choose to attend the transition program for, but it is recommended that you only attend one program session. If you are enrolled in either the Medical Science or Health stream, it is recommended that you attend the program session for your stream, regardless of the major you are enrolled in.
If you are not sure which group your major falls into, you can take a look at the corresponding page below
Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science
Physics
Chemistry
Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES)
Geosciences
History and Philosophy of Science
Psychology
These transition programs also give you a taste of what it is like to be mentored by an older student in your major. Having a mentor is an excellent way for you to accelerate your transition to university and to start to build a network of peers that can help you through your degree. The Faculty of Science offers a semester long Undergraduate Peer Mentoring program where you will have access not only to a mentor group, but also social and educational events to help you throughout your first semester. If you would like to be a part of the Science Undergraduate Peer Mentoring program, please record your interest when registering for this event.

From 15 - 17 February USU is hosting three huge days at USYD stacked with heaps of freebies, live music, over 180 club stalls, movie nights, parties and so much more.
This year, we're welcoming back students with a bang with three daily FREE gigs from some of the biggest Aussie artists live at the Main Stage.
Kicking things off on Wednesday 15 Feb we are thrilled to be hosting Aussie legends Teenage Dads, and King Stingray... and we can't wait!
Teenage Dads
In a time where garage rock has spent years at the forefront of Australian Music, the youthful Teenage Dads stand alone with their unique, charming indie-pop sound, and have been winning over audiences and musicians alike with their memorable self produced, recorded and mixed song writing, electrifying live shows and quirky charisma. In their effort to bring something new to Australian Music, the four Mornington Peninsula high school friends combine a variety of musical elements in their songs. Their infectious melodies, intricate synth lines, hooky guitars and unconventional chords and structure can be compared to the likes of Phoenix, The Strokes and The Beach Boys.
With music that is carefully written in consideration with its reception in a live setting, Teenage Dads enchant live audiences with an outstanding show rich in dancing and singalongs. The band have toured Australia numerous times, playing to sold out crowds both young and young-at-heart, graced festival stages NYE on the Hill and St Kilda festival, and have supported the likes of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Ruby Fields, Northeast Party House and recently were invited to tour with Australian heavy-weights, Lime Cordiale.
King Stingray
King Stingray is a story of lifelong friendship and two cultures coming together. Growing up together in Yirrkala in North-East Arnhem Land, founding members Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu (frontman) and Roy Kellaway (guitar) have been playing and making music together for as long as they can remember.
Yirrŋa and Roy formed King Stingray with mates Dimathaya Burarrwanga (rhythm guitar backing vocals and yidaki), Campbell Messer (bass) and Lewis Stiles (drums). The band seamlessly blend ancient indigenous melodies with surf, indie and funk influences to create a unique sound of their own: Yolŋu surf-rock.
Propelled by the instant success of their debut track “Hey Wanhaka” in October 2020, accidental lockdown anthem “Get Me Out”, and current groove-laden dance jam “Milkumana”, the band have soared to unexpected heights. In just over 12 months King Stingray have performed for triple j’s Live at the Wireless, appeared on ABC TV’s The Sound, been profiled in The Guardian and Rolling Stone, and won triple j’s Unearthed Artist of the Year J award.
The band spent 2021 dodging COVID-19 restrictions to wow crowds along the eastern states, completely selling out their first ever tour in March/April and gaining new fans at Dark Mofo in Hobart and Splendour in the Grass XR.
Register below to secure your spot and we'll see you at the Welcome Fest Main Stage!
Can't make it on Wednesday 15th? We've got a jam-packed schedule so be sure to check out everything happening here.

Day 2 on Thursday 16 Feb we are super excited to be hosting the incredible Haiku Hands and Genesis Owusu!!!
Haiku Hands
Based across Melbourne and Sydney, the core of Haiku Hands is Beatrice Lewis, Claire Nakazawa and Mie Nakazawa. Together, they curate, perform and work as a collective of artists, engaging and exploring social norms with their lyrical and visual content. Their influences range from hip-hop to pop, electronic to dance, and everything beyond.
Haiku Hands brought their singular, rebellious, and outright fun sound across multiple continents over the past three years. On the heel of their breakthrough performances at the UK’s Great Escape, Haiku Hands has been touted by NME as “Australia’s most electrifying pop prospect” and “a thrilling pop hybrid” who combine the pure pop attitude of Charli XCX with the energy and swagger of The Beastie Boys.
Haiku Hands is eager to get back on stage to present to you their new material along with all of their old favourites. Their fun and ecstatic live shows are unlike anything you’ve seen before, Haiku Hands’ live performance is not one to be missed!
Genesis Owusu
Genesis Owusu is a Ghanaian-Australian songwriter and performer whose hard to categorize music draws from laid-back funk, hardcore rap, and the energy of alternative rock. Naming Frank Ocean, Kanye West, OutKast, and Jimi Hendrix as influences, his songs are both celebratory and introspective, while touching on relevant social issues such as cultural appropriation and police brutality. After earning attention throughout Australia with early releases such as the 2017 EP Cardrive and his highly energetic live shows, Owusu's single "Don't Need You" received airplay from U.K. and U.S. tastemakers in 2020. His debut album, Smiling with No Teeth, arrived in 2021.
Following the release of Owusu's Cardrive EP, his song "Sideways," produced by Perrin Moss and Simon Mavin of Hiatus Kaiyote, became a radio hit. Additional tracks such as "Wit' da Team" (2018) and "WUTD" (2019) attracted attention, and Owusu was awarded ACT Live Voice of the Year during the 2019 National Live Music Awards. His 2020 single "Don't Need You" became a number one hit on Triple J, additionally receiving airplay on BBC Radio 6 in the U.K. and American stations like KCRW and WXPN. He recorded his debut album, Smiling with No Teeth (2021), alongside notable Australian musicians such as Kirin J. Callinan, Touch Sensitive, and World Champion's Julian Sudek.

From 15 - 17 February USU is hosting three huge days at USYD stacked with heaps of freebies, live music, over 180 club stalls, movie nights, parties and so much more!
This year, we're welcoming back students with a bang with three daily FREE gigs from some of the biggest Aussie artists live at the Main Stage.
For our third and final main stage gig on Friday 17 Feb we are finishing the week on a high note, hosted by The Buoys and Northeast Party House!
The Buoys
A fizzled-out Tinder date collided with a Gumtree ad, and from the flaming ashes rose The Buoys, the sweet and savory all-female Sydney outfit making noise across Australia. Provoked by workplace feuds, slow walkers on the footpath and a tonne of bad dates, The Buoys carve out a fresh space in the indie guitar scene, traversing the bounds from uncertainty to curiosity, disappointment to determination.
The Buoys well and truly kicked off 2022 by placing at #85 in triple j’s prestigious hottest 100 countdown - an absolute bucket list dream to the band and a small taste of all that is to come. Prior to this they took 2021 by storm with sold out headline tours across Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney and their single ‘Bad Habit’ hailed as "the musical definition of a bullseye" by Richard Kingsmill. Solidifying their spot as front runners in the Australian music scene, the band sat in triple j’s Most Played for weeks on end (including cracking the top 5), as well as becoming cover girls for Spotify’s ‘Local Noise’ and ‘Rock Out’ playlists. The band swiftly followed this up with the release of cathartic banger ‘Lie To Me Again’, becoming the most playlisted Australian act across streaming platforms in release week, receiving a full rotation triple j add, cover placement on Spotify’s ‘Indie Arrivals’, as well as charting in Shazam's Top 100, and Spotify AU Viral 50.
Northeast Party House
High-energy party starters Northeast Party House have moved on from warehouse parties in Melbourne’s inner city to national festival closers.
Northeast have built a loyal fan base around three self-produced, guitar-driven, dance-heavy LPs 'Any Given Weekend', 'Dare' & ‘Shelf Life’, which have seen the band tour constantly in their home country as well as internationally, playing sold out headline shows and showcase events at The Great Escape (UK), CMJ (NY) and Culture Collide (LA).
Register below to secure your spot and we'll see you at the Welcome Fest Main Stage!
We've got a jam-packed schedule so be sure to check out everything happening here.

It is a real fighting sport where you actually come to grips with your opponent, specialising in close-in fighting - just what you need for effective self-defence. Storyline
White Goodman (Ben Stiller) is the owner and founder of Globo Gym, and would love nothing more than owning Average Joe's Gymnasium. Peter LaFleur (Vince Vaughn) doesn't want to lose his gym to Goodman, but can't find a way to get $50,000 in time. Peter and his gang of gym buddies think of ways to raise money, finally settling on winning a dodge ball tournament. White Goodman retaliates by creating his own dodge ball team to finish off Peter. Peter's team doesn't do too well, until legendary ADAA champ Patches O'Houlihan (Rip Torn) turns up ready to train them.

Use the maps function in the Sydney Uni App to find the locations. Look for posters at each location for a glimpse of the past, courtesy of the University Archives.
1. The Botany Lawn, the War Memorial Arch and those gargoyles on the structure in the northwest corner. A little Australiana on show, if you look closely.
2. The Carillon – you’ve probably walked past it, even heard it play, but look up and consider the size and number of bells up there
3. Chau Chak Wing Museum – this beautiful modern building is home to several collections which had been housed separately. Go right on the entry level and take time to look at the old style cabinets which were moved across from the Nicholson Museum when it closed and connect the modern with the past.
4. Graffiti Tunnel – a favourite of many. Don’t just rush through. take your time to look at the works, read the official signs. The tunnel has reflected campus and social attitudes for decades.
5. Holme Building Terrace – The terrace conjures a sense of the early 1900s. Stand on the terrace and look over campus. The original design focused the eye through the campus along an axis that is far less noticeable now as the campus continuously evolves, and the trees grow.
6. Round House – can you guess it’s function just by standing in it? (There’s a clue in the photo above.)
7. Vice-Chancellor's Garden – a true oasis, open to everyone. Return during the seasons to see it change.

Please register for the event here.
The relationship you have with your supervisor will have a huge bearing on your HDR experience. This is why the SUPRA HDR Equity Network has teamed up with ithinkwell to present: 'Managing your Supervisor with Hugh Kearns.'
New PhD and Masters students tend to assume that it is the supervisor’s responsibility to manage the relationship and can tend to be a bit passive. However, it is your Research Degree, and you need to be active in the supervisory relationship. Supervisors are usually overworked, under a lot of pressure and like all of us, are not perfect. As a research student you need to have some strategies to work effectively with your supervisor.
In this workshop you will learn:
How to deal with different supervisory styles
Differing expectations
How to use meetings to help you make progress
Asking for and dealing with feedback
Dealing with difficult situations
Date: 28/03/2023
Time: 1-3pm
Target: Any research student
Duration: 2 hours
Format: Via Zoom

Join us to celebrate the opening of the University's new community seed library! 🌻 The Community Seed Swap will be a beginner-friendly workshop where participants can learn how to start plants from seed. 🌱 The workshop will cover how to save seeds, store and label them, as well as when and how to select and start plants to grow from seeds.
🌿 We will be sowing out seeds on the day for students to take home and grow into beautiful new plants. Plus, we'll be making seed bombs with native Australian seeds to help re-wild our urban landscape! 🌸🌺
The community seed library is a new student-led initiative to build a more resilient and sustainable future by preserving and sharing locally-grown seeds. The library will keep and maintain heirloom seed varieties that are well-suited to growing in the local climate. If you're already a keen gardener and have successfully propagated seeds, we'd love you to bring them along to contribute to the library!
🌞 Please keep in mind that this event will be held outdoors - in case of rain we would recommend a rain jacket or poncho, and for a sunny day we would recommend sunscreen, a hat, and water bottle. To keep up with details about the event or to get in touch with the workshop leaders, feel free to follow/message @usyd.garden on Instagram for any questions you have or for help with directions!

Research Integrity & SUPRA present this interactive workshop session covering external interests for HDR candidates. Thinking about your external interests, declaring where required, and appropriately managing any conflict of interests now can help to avoid issues later, including when it comes to submitting your thesis.
Every currently enrolled HDR student is required to complete an online form declaring external interests relevant to their candidature or research.
Research Integrity and SUPRA present this session to help HDR candidates understand how to declare and manage research-related external interests (and conflicts of interests) under the Research Code of Conduct 2019 and other University policies.

The workshop will be hosted via Zoom. Register now!
Have you ever felt confused about authorship criteria, or who should qualify as an author on a publication?
Do you find it challenging to have conversations about authorship, or to negotiate your position as an author on a paper?
Research Integrity and SUPRA present this session to help HDR candidates understand Authorship under the Research Code of Conduct 2019. The 60 minute session will address questions such as:
What is authorship?
How do I navigate discussions around authorship?
What are my responsibilities as a researcher?
What resources and support do the University and SUPRA provide to help me?
The session includes the opportunity to participate in interactive discussion of case studies focusing on authorship, and there will be time to ask any questions you have.
