Starting university in a new country often comes with a lot of unexpected questions. You might be wondering how the academic system works, what’s expected of you, and who you can turn to for help when things get overwhelming.

In this workshop, we’ll explore the essentials together:

• Understanding and comparing academic systems
• Navigating student services — including Safer Communities, Counselling, and SUPRA

Australia is more than just beaches and kangaroos — it’s a land shaped by ancient traditions, diverse cultures, and rich histories. In this relaxed and engaging peer-led workshop, we’ll uncover the stories that define this country and help you make sense of the vibrant landscape you’re stepping into.

Together, we’ll explore:

• The history of Australia, with a focus on Aboriginal heritage
• Cultural competence in a multicultural Australia
• How Aboriginal culture continues to thrive today
• Must-see sights and natural wonders in and around Sydney

On your university journey, friendships and social connections can make all the difference. Together, you’ll study, grow, and one day, walk across the graduation stage side by side.

In this workshop, we’ll talk openly about building and sustaining meaningful connections during your time at USyd. We’ll cover:

• Social circle opportunities at USyd — including USU, Clubs, and Student Life events
• Dating and relationships, including sexual consent and health
• Navigating healthy versus toxic relationship dynamics
• Where to go for support

Days can be tough. You might be feeling unwell, or perhaps you have an ongoing health issue that needs attention. In a new country, even knowing where to begin can feel overwhelming — and that’s completely okay. We’re here to help.

In this workshop, we’ll walk you through how the Australian healthcare system works and where to go when you need support. We’ll cover:

• Key differences between your home country’s system and Australia’s and how it fits into the system
• What bulk-billing means and how to access it
• Finding a GP and how to access medical help on campus
• How to use your Bupa OSHC effectively
• Available health and counselling services at USYD

University life can be exciting but also stressful, especially when you’re managing studies, work, relationships, and being far from home. Taking care of your mental and physical wellbeing isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity.

This workshop is all about finding balance and knowing where to turn when things get tough. In this workshop, we will be discussing:

• Preventing health issues
• Techniques to manage your life better
• Stress management techniques you can use throughout the semester
• Health and wellbeing services on campus, including Wellbeing, Counselling, and SUSF
• When and how to seek help

Do you know that international students are disproportionately targeted by rental scams and job exploitation in Australia? According to the Australian Government’s Study Australia website, scams and unfair work conditions are among the top risks faced by international students. Knowing your rights isn’t just helpful — it’s essential for staying safe and confident throughout your time here.

In this workshop, we will be discussing:

• Tenancy rights and common rental issues, including how to spot and avoid rental scams
• Awareness of modern slavery, including exploitation in casual or underpaid work
• Practical protections, reporting options, and where to get support

All the essentials for success in your semester! You'll hear from Peer Learning Advisors and ICT staff about how to use Canvas, plan your semester, and achieve your best on all your assessments! Our student peers will share their advice and experience, and answer all of your questions on what to expect from your study workload and how to get started and keep on track for the semester.

Discover how to harness generative AI tools responsibly and effectively in your academic journey. In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn practical strategies to use AI as a learning enhancement tool while maintaining academic integrity. 

As an international student, International Student Welcome Day is your official welcome to the University of Sydney Community. You will experience a traditional Aboriginal dance performance and Welcome to Country. An information session will help you transition to University life with important information on support services and tips to help look after your health and wellbeing in your new home, Australia.

What your day will look like?

• 9:00am-9:30am Line up at front of the Great Hall
• 9:30am Door opens
• 9:55am Door closes
• 10:00am Formal proceeding starts. You'll hear information on support, student organisations, health and safety services, campus life and advice from current students.
• 11:30am Social activities and info booths at the Quadrangle
• 12:30pm Walk over to Sydney Uni Sport (SUS) for lunch and more activities
• 14:00pm Conclusion of the day
