Courageous Conversations: Speaking Country

Courageous Conversations: Speaking Country

🌿🌟 Sharing Language, Culture, and Collective Connection 🌟🌿

Join Drew Longbottom for a powerful conversation that explores Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language, identity, and connection to Country. Through personal storytelling and cultural insight, Drew will share how language shapes who we are and strengthens our sense of belonging to Culture and community through these themes:

  • Language as identity and connection - Exploring the importance of language in shaping personal identity (including Drew’s story) and how language acts as a bridge to Culture and Country.
  • Country through an Aboriginal lens - Sharing Aboriginal perspectives on what “Connection to Country” truly means—spiritual, cultural, historical, and lived.

  • Healing, Courage, and Country - How connection to Country can nurture positive courage, resilience, and healing from trauma.

  • Understanding Country through language - Highlighting how language deepens understanding of land, culture, kinship, and belonging.

  • Universal harmony and shared connection - Emphasising the universal relationship all people can have with Country—honouring harmony and connection across religions, cultures, and backgrounds.

This session is a chance to step outside the lecture theatre and engage in a real, honest conversation about identity, place, and what it means to belong at university.

  • All students are welcome to attend and be part of this meaningful conversation.
  • Bring along a pen and something to write on, to write your experiences down and make it an interactive session for you to be part of.
