AI and you at the University of Sydney

Educational Innovation

Join your fellow students for a panel discussion on the changes to assessment in Semester 2 and find out more about how they are using AI effectively and responsibly in their studies. We'll also discuss the changes to the academic integrity policy around generative AI and how this impacts you, plus you'll have the chance to ask your most pressing questions to staff and students.

What’s changing?

From Semester 2 2025, the University is introducing a new Assessment Framework that categorises assessments based on their purpose (that is, assessment for, as, or of learning).

Under this new model, there are two categories of assessment:

  • ‘Secure’ assessments: supervised assessments designed to measure that you have met the learning outcomes of your course. Generally using AI is prohibited for these assessments.
  • ‘Open’ assessments: unsupervised assessments that support learning through feedback and allow the use of helpful resources, including generative AI tools. Your teachers will guide you to understand the more helpful ways of using AI that will support, instead of replace, your learning.

What does this mean for me?

  • Students may use generative AI tools to support their learning when completing open assessments.
  • Students must not use generative AI tools to complete secure assessments, unless expressly permitted by the unit of study coordinator.
  • If you use AI in your assessments, you are required to acknowledge it. Failing to do so can lead to a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy.
